WHAT IS FOOTY QUOTIENT?

Footy Quotient exists as a way to evaluate the statistical input of a player - relative to that of their team and the opposition - as a unique number known as THE Q.

Most significantly, THE Q is able to compare one player to another in a game played at ANY LEVEL, by ANY GENDER, and in ANY ERA.

This new way of looking at statistics is based on nothing more than the 4 fundamentals of footy - Kicks, Handballs, Marks and Score - which importantly...

a) have been recorded at VFL/AFL level for the longest amount of time - since Round 1 1965,

b) can be accumulated by ANY player on the field, and

c) let's face it, are the only ones that most pundits use when detailing a player's game. "They had 20 kicks, 15 handballs, took 8 marks and kicked 3.1"

The first section below explains the mathematics behind THE Q, whilst the next few sections explain the theory in more detail by comparing players and their stats.

THE Q MATHS

1 - PLAYER DATA

Take a player's statistics from a game

NAME TEAM OPPONENT KICKS HANDBALLS DISPOSALS MARKS GOALS BEHINDS SCORE
Matthew Lappin Carlton Fremantle 18 9 27 11 6 3 39

2 - MATCH DATA

Take the match statistics by combining that of the player's team and that of their opposition

DETAILS KICKS HANDBALLS DISPOSALS MARKS GOALS BEHINDS SCORE
Carlton 230 157 387 119 19 15 129
Fremantle 176 131 307 96 8 7 55
COMBINED 406 288 694 215 27 22 184
*SCORE totals do not include rushed behinds

3 - THE 4 KEY PLAYER STATISTICS RELATIVE TO THAT OF THEIR TEAM

Each player's statistic is evaluated as a percentage (quotient) of their team's total, and is known as TEAM Q

DETAILS KICKS HANDBALLS MARKS SCORE
Matthew Lappin 18 9 11 39
Carlton Total 230 157 119 129
TEAM Q 7.826 5.732 9.244 30.233

4 - THE 4 KEY PLAYER STATISTICS RELATIVE TO THAT OF THE MATCH

Each player's statistic is evaluated as a percentage (quotient) of the match total (both teams combined), and is known as MATCH Q

DETAILS KICKS HANDBALLS MARKS SCORE
Matthew Lappin 18 9 11 39
Match Total 406 288 215 184
MATCH Q 4.434 3.125 5.116 21.196

5 - OBTAIN THE Q

Add up the player's TEAM Q and MATCH Q totals

THE Q THEORY

Focus on ONE statistic - in this case, the player's score tally - and then compare it with others who have the same tally.

The table below shows a record of one player from every decade - each having kicked 4.2 - and it is ordered by THE Q from highest to lowest.

THE Q presents a view point like no other - a 13 possession game sits on top of the list, and a 45 possession game scores lower than one with only 8.
